Testimonials

I have been having regular massage therapy for the past 25 years for problems with my back and shoulders. When my therapist retired early last year, I felt very lucky to have found Irene Sutherland to continue with my treatment. Irene is very knowledgeable about bone structure and muscular issues. She is in tune with my particular needs and she has various methods of treatment depending on the needs of the client.

Irene has such healing hands and great knowledge of your anatomy. I look forward to my visits and the care Irene takes in her approach to her individual clients. I have no hesitation in recommending Irene as a massage therapist. She is a real gem.

I have been coming to Irene for several years now and have always come away from my massage extremely happy. Irene is very friendly and helpful and knows where the tightness is-sometimes when I don't even feel it myself. She asks which part of the body I would like her to concentrate on and doesn't just have her routine that she uses for everyone. it is a very individualized session. She is highly skilled and has given me by far the best massages I have ever had.

Cupping Therapy

Cupping therapy is a technique taken from traditional Chinese medicine which involves placing a heated glass cup on the skin to create a vacuum over the skin to stretch the soft tissue. It is used to release tension from the fascia (connective tissue), muscles and soft tissues. Irene uses vacuum and silicone cups which is a modern form of cupping where no flame is used. A vacuum is created with a mechanical suction pump acting through a valve located at the top of the cup. With cupping therapy, the skin, connective tissues and muscles are pulled upward to enhance circulation and provide pain management. Cupping can also draw toxins and oedema to the skin surface, relieving pain. The cup may be ‘stationary’ or ‘moving’ or a combination of both.

Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy massage is also known as Antenatal and Post Natal Massage. This technique uses light to medium pressure techniques to help release strained muscles during pregnancy and post pregnancy. Regular massage during pregnancy helps to reduce stiffness, back pain, hip pain, cramps, swelling and facilitates quality sleep. Post natal massage helps relieve muscular aches post labour.

Deep Tissue Massage

This massage uses slow strokes and deep pressure to target tight areas to release specific muscle tension and restore flexibility. This technique goes to the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissues to release chronic tension, which might have developed from injury or overuse. Particularly suitable for postural problems when you feel a need to be ‘straightened’ out. Deep tissue massage can be very relaxing!

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

A gentle, rhythmic massage technique which is intended to encourage the natural circulation of lymph through the body. Irene does not use oil for lymphatic drainage massage. Manual Lymphatic Drainage, also commonly known as lymphatic massage, is most suitable for managing heavy, swollen arms and legs due to fluid buildup. It is also effective in accelerating the recovery from bruising and wound healing post-surgery. Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a completely natural technique to decongest the lymphatic pathways, detoxify and improve the immune system through the elimination of bodily waste.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage treatment, such as for legs with oedema, takes 45 minutes. Irene advises and prescribes simple, effective exercises for those with oedema in their limbs. A therapeutic, full body manual lymphatic drainage including the face requires an hour.

The rhythmic, gentle pressure and movement of lymph drainage, work together to reduce pain and stress. Lymphatic drainage massage may help reduce fatigue and inflammation in the body as it promotes general vitality and well-being. People suffering from chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia have found lymphatic drainage to be beneficial.

Relaxation Massage

Commonly also known as Swedish massage. Pressure may be light to medium or even deep, depending on your preference. Use techniques to sedate the nervous system to relieve stress and anxiety. The approach is long smooth gliding strokes to help you relax. It is a great way to clear daily stresses that build up. A focused nurturing intent helps bring a relaxation response.

Remedial Massage

The aim of remedial massage is to restore proper function to muscles that are damaged, knotted and tense to a pain free balanced state. Freeing up soft tissues (muscles, connective tissues, ligaments and tendons) not only releases tension, it can improve a joint and the range of movement. Pressure applied can be strong and deep or gentle and shallow. Different techniques may be incorporated. Some of the techniques may include the following:

Myofascial Trigger Point  is commonly known as “muscle knots”. They are hyper-irritable spots in the fascia (connective tissues)  surrounding skeletal muscles. They are palpable nodules in taut bands of muscle fibres and are painful with or without compression or muscle contraction. Myofascial trigger points can ‘refer’ pain to another area of the body. To release tension and pain, pressure is applied over the myofascial trigger point to de-activate the hyper-irritable spot.

Myofascial Release focuses on releasing short tight muscles by applying pressure to the fascia (connective tissues) surrounding the muscle and using gentle, sustained techniques to release any tension. Releasing myofascial tension can ease many aches and pains, and it can also improve general health and well-being through the release of energy.

Vacuum Cupping is a modern form of cupping where no flame is used. Modern vacuum cupping uses plastic or silicon cups on the skin. With plastic cup, a vacuum is created with a mechanical suction pump acting through a valve located at the top of the cup. The skin, muscles and soft tissues are pulled upward to enhance circulation and provide pain management. Cupping therapy may be ‘stationery’ or ‘moving’ or a combination of both.

Since 2009, Irene has been offering manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), commonly known as lymphatic drainage massage or lymphatic massage. This treatment is effective for oedema, lymphoedema, significantly reducing swelling and heaviness in arms and legs. It enhances recovery from bruising and swelling post-surgery. Advice and practical exercises will be given to those with oedema in their limbs. MLD promotes wound healing and is a completely natural technique to strengthen the immune system. Besides improving the immune system, MLD is a very relaxing massage!
